Privacy PolicyAffiliate DisclaimerGreetings to all car enthusiasts! My name is Sergey Zaycev, and I am engaged in auto electrics for not the first year. Today I want to share with you my experience of installing a car alarm system. Nowadays a reliable security system is not a luxury, but a necessity, especially if you care about your car. This time I received a Daewoo Lanos car with an outdated Alligator alarm system. The client asked me to replace the old system with a new, more modern model Sheriff 1090 PRO with auto start.

I will tell you how to properly dismantle the old alarm system and install a new one, so that you can do it yourself or at least better understand what happens during the installation process. Along the way, I will explain why it is important to choose the right place to install the alarm unit, how to securely fasten the components and how to test the system after installation.
Overview of the vehicle and reasons for replacing the alarm system
When I received a Daewoo Lanos, my first task was to assess the current condition of the car and the security system installed on it. This car was equipped with a one-way Alligator alarm system, which, according to the client, was already obsolete and did not provide the proper level of protection. One-way alarm systems are known to work on the principle of "request-response", but do not provide feedback to the owner, which may not be sufficient in modern conditions.
The client expressed a desire to upgrade the security system and install a new alarm system with an auto-start function, which would allow to warm up the car remotely in the cold season. In modern realities, this is not only convenient, but also vital, especially for those who live in regions with harsh winters.
The Sheriff 1090 PRO alarm system that the customer chose offers a number of advantages over older models. Firstly, it is a two-way system, which allows the car owner to receive notifications about what is happening with the car in real time. Secondly, the auto-start function makes it much easier to operate the vehicle in cold weather.
After a preliminary inspection of the vehicle and discussion with the customer, we decided that it was necessary to completely dismantle the old system and install a new one. Before starting work, it is always important to make sure that all the necessary components of the new system are available and that the installation will not require additional elements, such as a siren, which, as it turned out, is missing from the Sheriff 1090 PRO kit.
Removal of the old alarm system
After we discussed the details of the replacement with the customer, I proceeded to remove the old Alligator alarm system. This process requires special attention, as improper removal of the system can damage the vehicle's wiring or cause other problems.
The first step was to partially disassemble the car to gain access to the components of the old alarm system. As it turned out, the system was not installed correctly - the wires were hanging like a washcloth and were not properly secured. Such negligent installation can lead to short circuits or other malfunctions in the vehicle's electrical system.

I started by carefully disconnecting all the wires and removing the alarm unit. In the process of disassembly I noticed that the siren mount was broken. This is a common problem on cars where the alarm system was installed many years ago and not properly maintained. Therefore, it was decided to install a new siren to ensure the reliability of the security system.
One of the most important aspects of removing the old alarm system is the proper handling of the wires. If you simply cut the wires without noting their purpose, it can make it difficult to install the new system. Therefore, I have carefully marked each wire so that there will be no confusion when connecting the new alarm system in the future.
After removing all components of the old system, including the lock relays and sensors, I checked the condition of the vehicle's wiring. Fortunately, no major damage or power problems were found, allowing me to proceed with the installation of the new Sheriff 1090 PRO system without delay.

Sheriff 1090 PRO alarm system package overview
After the old system has been successfully dismantled, it is time to unpack and examine the new Sheriff 1090 PRO alarm system. This step is important in order to make sure that all the necessary components are present and to prepare for proper installation.

When I opened the box with the new alarm system, I immediately noted that Sheriff 1090 PRO comes with a full set of elements necessary for installation. The set includes two keyfobs - one main with feedback and display, and the second auxiliary, more simple. Both keyfobs are ergonomically designed, making them easy to use.

The next component was the central alarm unit, which is the "brain" of the whole system. It is responsible for controlling all alarm functions, including auto start, engine blocking and other protection mechanisms.
The kit also includes:
- Wires for connecting the alarm system to the vehicle's electrical system;
- Impact sensors that respond to physical impact on the vehicle;
- Temperature sensor for monitoring engine condition, especially useful for cold season auto start;

However, when I inspected the kit, I found that it was missing the siren. This is a fairly common situation, as some alarm manufacturers do not include a siren in the basic kit, assuming it can be installed separately. Since my previous system had a damaged siren, I had to order a new one to complete the installation.
All components of the new alarm system look high quality and reliable. The next step is to select a place for installation of the central unit and prepare for installation of all components.

Installing the alarm system and connecting the autostart
After unpacking and studying all the components of Sheriff 1090 PRO I started the process of installing the alarm system. This stage requires special precision, as the reliability of the entire system depends on the correct installation.

The first thing I did was to decide where to install the central alarm unit. It is important to choose a place where the unit will be protected from accidental damage and at the same time have easy access to the necessary power supply circuits. In the case of Daewoo Lanos, I decided to install the unit in the same place where the old alarm system was located. However, unlike the previous installation, I decided to fix it more securely - using double-sided tape and ties. This will allow the unit to stay in place even under strong vibrations and avoid unintentional detachment.

I then moved on to the wiring connections. The Sheriff 1090 PRO includes many wires that need to be properly connected to the vehicle's system. One of the key points was to connect the wires for the auto start, emergency lights, door limiters, and power and ignition.
The problem I encountered was the length of the wires.

Some of them were shorter than expected, which required careful planning of the placement of the unit to avoid having to extend the wires. I decided to install the unit in such a way that the main wires, such as those going to the autostart and power, could be easily connected to the appropriate points on the car without additional extensions.

After installing the central unit, I began wiring additional components such as the shock sensors, temperature sensor, and lockout relay. Each component was carefully attached and connected to the vehicle's system. For example, I attached the keyfob module to the windshield using double-sided tape. It is important to wipe the glass beforehand to ensure a secure attachment.

Special attention was paid to the placement of the wires. I always try to make sure that the wires do not dangle and are neatly arranged. This not only improves the appearance of the installation, but also prevents possible damage to the wires during vehicle operation.
After completing all the connections, I proceeded to the final part - setting up the system and testing its operation.
Setting up and testing a new alarm system
After installing all the components of the Sheriff 1090 PRO alarm system, it is time to configure the system and check its performance. This stage is very important, as it allows you to make sure that all system functions, including auto start, work correctly, and that the car is reliably protected from unauthorized access.
The first step was to test the basic functions of the alarm system. I checked how the system works when opening and closing doors, turning the alarm on and off, and responding to shocks. The shock sensors previously installed worked properly, which showed that they were wired correctly. This is important because improperly configured sensors may trigger to minor vibrations or, on the contrary, may not react to real threats.

The next stage was to test the auto-start function. This function is especially useful in the cold season, when you need to warm up the car before traveling. To test the autostart, I started the engine remotely from outside the car. The alarm system successfully activated the ignition and started the engine, which showed that all circuits were correctly connected.
I also checked how the system reacts to the driver's actions when autostart is activated. For example, when disengaging the car from the handbrake, the engine should stall, which is an additional safety measure. Everything worked as it should - the engine stalled when attempting to disarm the vehicle, preventing possible unauthorized access.

Another important part of the test was the control of the central locking and windows. The alarm system correctly closed and opened the doors, as well as raised the windows when the armed mode was activated. This is an important function to ensure that the vehicle is not accidentally left open or unprotected.
After testing the basic functions, I moved on to customizing the system parameters to meet the client's needs. This included setting time delays for autostart, changing the sensitivity of the shock sensors and customizing the keyfobs for easier use.
As a result of all the work performed, the Sheriff 1090 PRO alarm system was fully configured and tested. I made sure that it works correctly and reliably protects the car.
Practical tips for using Sheriff 1090 PRO alarm system
After installing and configuring the alarm system, it is important not only to operate it correctly, but also to ensure a long service life of the device. Sheriff 1090 PRO system is a modern and reliable solution for the protection of your car, but like any other equipment, it requires certain care and compliance with the rules of use.
The first thing you should pay attention to is the auto start function. In winter, this function greatly simplifies the operation of the car, allowing you to warm up the engine before traveling. However, in order for the autostart to work correctly, it is important to monitor the condition of the car battery. If the battery is discharged, the system will not be able to start the engine, so it is recommended to regularly check the charge and recharge the battery if necessary.
In addition, try to avoid frequent use of the autostart for short periods of time. This can lead to engine wear and increase fuel consumption. It is optimal to use the autostart only when you really need to warm up the vehicle before driving.
The second important aspect is the care of the alarm system keyfobs. Since the keyfob is your main tool for controlling the system, its serviceability is extremely important. Regularly check the condition of the keyfob battery and replace it when it starts to run low. Also, avoid dropping the key fob or exposing it to moisture to avoid damage.
The third is keeping the alarm sensors and wiring clean. Although most of the system components are protected from external influences, over time dirt and dust can accumulate on the sensors, which can impair their operation. It is recommended to periodically clean dirt and dust from the sensors with a soft cloth. It is also worth checking the condition of the wiring, especially after winter, when there may be a lot of salt and moisture on the road.
Another important point is timely maintenance of the alarm system. If you notice that the alarm system has started to work incorrectly, do not postpone a visit to an auto electrician. Quick troubleshooting will avoid more serious problems in the future.
Last but not least, don't forget to test the operation of the system on a regular basis. This will help you to make sure that all alarm functions are working correctly and the car is reliably protected. Periodically check the auto start, the operation of sensors and the alarm system's response to external influences.
Following these simple recommendations, you can not only ensure a long life of the alarm system Sheriff 1090 PRO, but also protect your car from possible threats.
